Johnson, Turkvan Named January Student-Athletes of the Month

BUFFALO, NY - The Bryant & Stratton Buffalo athletic department announced it's January Student-Athletes of the Month on Monday recognizing senior Alissa Johnson of the women's basketball team and freshman Danny Turkvan of the men's basketball team as the recipients.

"Both Alissa and Danny had great months of January after a long layoff," Director of Athletics Damone Brown said.  "Both were great on the floor for their respective teams but they were even better off it.  Both were named to the Dean's List during the first semester which is an even better achievement."

Johnson - the school's reining Female Athlete of the Year - helped lead her team to a 2-2 record in the month of January.  She scored 14 points at NCAA Division II opponent Roberts Wesleyan on January 12th and followed that with a 16-point performance at Clarkson, helping lead the Bobcats to an 83-67 road win.  She finished the month scoring 13 at Point Park.  She also totaled 13 rebounds in the month.

Turkvan helped lead the Bobcats to four wins and just two defeats in the month, scoring in double-figures in all but one game.  He scored nine points and secured seven rebounds in a 90-61 win at Bryant & Stratton Albany to open the month.  He then closed the month with back-to-back double-doubles.  Against Point Park on the 23rd, he scored 12 points and secured 11 rebounds before having the best game of his career a week later at Clarkson, where he scored 23 points, secured 12 rebounds and dished out five assists in a 107-97 win.  He also added three steals and two blocks in that game.  For the month, Turkvan shot 54.9 percent from the floor and averaged 14 points and 8.1 rebounds.

Both men's and women's basketball teams kick off their February schedules with road contests at Villa Maria on Wednesday the third.  The women's game is set to tip at 4:30 p.m. with the men's slated for 7 p.m.
